The honest framing
A gas furnace burns fuel to make heat; a heat pump moves heat and also provides cooling. In Minnesota the strongest option for many homes isn't one or the other — it's a dual-fuel system that uses a heat pump most of the season and a gas furnace as backup on the coldest days.

- Upfront cost. A furnace-only replacement is typically the lowest upfront. A heat pump (which also replaces your AC) costs more but does two jobs.
- Operating cost. Heat pumps are very efficient in the shoulder seasons; gas can be cheaper in deep cold depending on rates. Dual-fuel automatically uses whichever is better.

Replacing only a dying furnace and your AC is fine? A high-efficiency furnace is simple and economical. Replacing an aging AC too, or chasing lower bills and lower carbon? A heat pump or dual-fuel system is usually the better long-term value.

The most common mistake is a like-for-like swap without comparing options, or installing a heat pump without setting the dual-fuel changeover point correctly. Insist on a load calculation and a configured changeover, not a rule of thumb.
