What short-cycling is
Short-cycling is when your furnace starts a heating cycle, runs briefly, shuts off, and restarts again minutes later — without ever satisfying the thermostat. It wastes fuel, wears out components, and leaves rooms uneven. It's one of the most common winter complaints we hear.
The usual causes (cheapest first)
- Dirty air filter — restricts airflow, the furnace overheats, and a safety limit shuts it down. Often a free fix.
- Blocked vents or returns — furniture or closed registers starve airflow.
- Dirty flame sensor — the furnace lights, can't confirm the flame, and shuts off for safety.
- Thermostat placement — a thermostat in a draft or sunbeam misreads the room.
- Oversized furnace — heats the air too fast, hits the setpoint, and cycles off (a design problem, not a part).
- Failing control board or limit switch — needs diagnosis.
When to call
Change the filter and open the registers first. If it still short-cycles, call — a dirty flame sensor or limit switch tripping is a job for a technician, and persistent short-cycling on an older unit can be an early sign of a heat-exchanger or control failure you don't want to ignore in a Minnesota January.
Failure modes it leads to
Left alone, short-cycling accelerates wear on the igniter, blower, and gas valve, and the constant overheating can shorten heat-exchanger life. The fuel waste also shows up on your bill.
