Before you call, rule out the quick stuff — it's safe and sometimes it's the whole fix:
- Thermostat — set to Heat, temperature above the current room temp, fresh batteries.
- Power — check the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch nearby) and the breaker.
- Filter — a severely clogged filter can trip a safety limit; swap it if it's filthy.
- Furnace door — the blower door must be fully seated or the furnace won't run.
- Gas — confirm other gas appliances work.
When to stop and call
If those don't restore heat — or you smell gas, see soot, or your CO detector alarms — stop and call. If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, leave the home first and call from outside. Don't keep resetting a furnace that won't stay running.
