How a Gas Furnace Heats Your Minnesota Home

What a gas furnace is

A gas furnace is a forced-air heater: it burns natural gas to create heat, transfers that heat to the air in your home, and uses a blower to push warm air through your ducts. Four parts do the real work — the burner (makes the flame), the heat exchanger (a metal chamber that warms the air without mixing it with combustion gases), the blower motor (moves the air), and the thermostat (tells it when to run).

How the cycle actually runs

When your thermostat calls for heat, the furnace opens the gas valve and ignites the burners. Combustion gases pass through the heat exchanger and exhaust safely out the flue. Return air from your home flows across the hot heat exchanger, warms up, and the blower sends it back out through your supply registers. A high-efficiency (condensing) furnace adds a second heat exchanger to squeeze more heat out of the exhaust — which is why those models vent through PVC pipe and drip condensate.

When to pay attention

You'll get the longest life and lowest bills when the furnace runs in long, steady cycles rather than rapid on/off bursts.
